Schiele Schiele Schiele

The picture must radiate light, the bodies have their own light which they consume to live: they burn, they are not lit from outside.

So I've been looking at some Schiele works. They intrigue me greatly.

Particularily the self-portraits. I love self-portraits, I think they're the most interesting of all art, so it makes sense that I would be interested in Schiele's. We actually looked at this and another in one of my art history classes. One thing I noted and have now since realized to be standard Schiele is the twisted, agonizing facial features. Also, he frequently cuts out the hands; why is that? I have my own opinions...dissatisfaction with the restrictive society he was living in...a feeling of helplessness because he could do nothing to change it. Still, I want to get in his mind.

Some quotes by him help us understand him a bit better:

Art cannot be modern. Art is primordially eternal.

At present, I am mainly observing the physical motion of mountains, water, trees and flowers. One is everywhere reminded of similar movements in the human body, of similar impulses of joy and suffering in plants.

I believe in the immortality of all creatures.

Hmmm...

Tea Quote of the Day

Our trouble is that we drink too much tea. I see in this the slow revenge of the Orient, which has diverted the Yellow River down our throats.

Tea of the Day

Sencha green tea is made from leaves that are plucked and gently steamed the same day for a taste that’s fresh from the fields. This naturally decaffeinated tea is enhanced with the whistling cool freshness of spearmint and peppermint.

From me: Ooooh, refeshing.
